JOLT MUSIC 009:

Shiner (Holly Waxwing Remix)

Holly Waxwing is a musician and sound designer based out of Providence, Rhode Island. Growing up in Alabama, Holly Waxwing has long had a fascination with birds, plants, and mushrooms. His name is even an amalgamation of his favorite bird, the Cedar Waxwing, and his favorite shrub, holly. He has released music on PC Music, Cascine and Noumenal Loom.

His last album, The New Pastoral, manages to feel complex and focused, while also loose and fluid, a back and forth dynamic of exploring the micro and the macro. You can hear a wide range of influences from Arthur Russell to Americana, Prefab Sprout to Van Dyke Parks and the writings of people such as Donna Haraway, Wendell Berry and E. O. Wilson. It filters all this through a process and comes out sounding like glitchy sound design coated with infectious melody, while straddling immersive ambient, outsider pop, and pulsating IDM.

About making the remix Holly Waxwing says:

When I got into the project files and stems for "Shiner," I started noticing a few really nice details and snippets that didn't make it into the final mix. In my own process, I often have a number of sketches, unused samples/MIDI and sometimes almost full songs off to the right of the main project in Ableton, and it can be really fun to re-explore these ideas that got lost on the cutting room floor.

The main motif I focused on for my remix is this Lossy vocal arp that I left pretty raw and started to build around. Étienne/OT has a really similar sonic sensibility and sound design approach to mine, but he often approaches things from a more club ready angle, so it was fun to blend and straddle those worlds in this remix. I like to think of it as Cowgirl club :>
